Kathryn Mackenzie wants nothing more than to return home to America after serving five years as a missionary teacher in India. She and her charge, Sparky Maintriff, an orphaned six year old, board a tramp steamer bound for Hawaii.

On the way, the vessel catches fire and sinks, shipwrecking Kathryn, Sparky, and two other passengers: an American ex-marine from Wyoming and his British friend. Marooned on an uninhabited island, these four strangers must somehow forge a life even while they battle hardship and deprivation, face unseen dangers, and figure
out how to get home.

Who Bravely Dares is a rich story of human triumph over adversity, with touches of fantasy, romance, and history to add spice.

Critique:Fiction/Romance  Reviewed by Wanda Mitchell   May 1, 2004

I enjoyed this book. The story moves along smoothly and kept my interest with the bits of information about the ship’s exotic ports of call, the island’s plants, and the ingenuity displayed by the characters in using the resources to provide food and shelter.

I liked how the author allows the characters to work together despite their very different personalities, and personal fears and demons while totally changing the dynamics of their relationships by adding a young child into the mix.

I appreciated how each of the characters acknowledges their fears but control their behavior and emotions to give Sparky as much emotional and physical security as possible in their situation. All in all this is a very pleasant and positive read.
